My contribution today is Mr. Zip.

Our home received a similar notice like the one above in the early 1960's. It's too bad my father didn't save his. Who knew this would be a collectible?
I recall my father saying, "Our zip is 32780. Memorize that." (He was a man of few words.) Well, I did and I still remember the zip to this day.
Want to join in the fun of Postcard Friendship Friday? Everyone is welcome. This 'event' is hosted by my good friend Marie at Voila! Vintage Postcards. Be sure to leave a message at her blog so we'll all know to visit your place too.
Thanks for coming by! Have a great weekend y'all.
I always save the ad postcards from USPS and have even bought some.
ReplyDeleteDon't ya kind of wish that was the last number you had to memorize? Love it... what a great thing to have! Happy PFF!
ReplyDeleteHadn't thought of these in a long time. Thanks for the memory!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool card...good thing you saved it!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great card, thanks for sharing your story.
ReplyDeleteDebby
Postcardy ~ USPS do have interesting adv postcards.
ReplyDeleteMargo ~ Yeah, I do wish it was the last number I had to remember. Maybe my path into accounting was in self-defense? I do have a good head for numbers.
Mildred ~ It's funny, I thought of you as I posted this since you're so good with memorabilia.
Aimee ~ I wish the card was in our family but I found it on the internet.
Debby ~ You're welcome. I do enjoy vintage much more than modern (fill in the blanks - music, movies, etc.).
Thanks for stopping by y'all. :o)
My first zip was 35208! Somethings you never forget!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant way to introduce zip codes too! Mr Zip makes the idea of it seem fun and lively! I had never heard of him.... you're such a champ Sparky girl! What was the surprise I'm dying to hear about it!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many of these things that pass through our hands, which end up being collectibles. I wish there were some way of predicting which ones are likely to stay the distance.
ReplyDeleteI don't know when postcodes were introduced in the UK, nor do I remember the our first one. I have quite enough difficulty remembering our current one!
It's collectible, but even in mint condition it's not worth anything near what your source is asking for it. I think he just doesn't want to sell it, not really.
ReplyDeleteRemember how ZIP+4 was supposed to speed up mail handling and reduce costs even more? Have you noticed that postage goes up annually now?
That's funny, I remember my first zipcode too. 06360.
ReplyDeleteI actually remember those notices .. fun that it got saved!
ReplyDeleteOh wow I remember when we got one of these !
ReplyDeleteHave not thought of this in ages.
I need to find out which box of stuff my Mom has it tucked away in :)
I am so glad you shared this it's great fun to look back .
Happy Postcard Friendship Friday .
Have a super weekend.
Happy Trails.
Hey look here I am at your blog and I don't have to catch up to a bunch of posts, just one. It's a miracle I must be getting more time to sit.
ReplyDeleteI remember Mr. Zippy. Funny the things we think we have to memorize. Did you know Einstein didn't know his home address? He had to look it up everytime he needed it. I think my girls are like him. Just in that one regard.
I remember those!!! People put up such a fuss--and now we've gotten so used to it we don't even pay attention to it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
63119......my childhood zip code.
ReplyDelete:-D
Have a beautiful weekend.
Happy PFF my beautiful friend!! Thanks for visiting me today. I still remember my childhood phone number and address. ha ha What gets me is my Mother still remembers my health plan numbers. ha ha Funny the things we remember. Hmmm, now what did I have for breakfast? ha ha Have a great holiday weekend!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post! I remember those cards and my Zip Code at the time: 48220. My phone # was: Lincoln 8-5784
ReplyDelete1963, Mr. Zip..A good year. Wow how time flies! Enjoyin' these postcards. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLinda
I remember when they sent out those cards, too. 76067 - that was mine. Thanks for the memories. Happy PFF!
ReplyDeleteMy mom has told us many stories of her childhood but the one about the new zipcode is one that I know by heart. What a neat reminder! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteStevie ~ Birmingham, AL! Lovely, lovely area. I could live there in a New York minute if it wasn't for all the tornadoes. Yipes! Beautiful landscapes though. Maybe a house inside of a hillside would work? :o)
ReplyDeleteMarie ~ I guess you're not old enough to remember the introduction of Mr. Zip? It was a Big To Do when the zip code was introduced in the early 1960's.
Sheila ~ We just never know what's going to be popular 40 years from now, do we? :o)
Chris ~ You're right about the zip+4. All it's done is make things worse AND the price go up. Typical government running controlling something. Just wait until Health Care is completely ruined like Canada, UK, France, etc. and people start dieing by the thousands for lack of proper care. [sigh]
Mandala ~ Connecticut.
Terry ~ Check and see if you're a millionaire. [giggle] Your fortune may be resting in an old shoebox. (Hope it is.) :o)
Lanny ~ And that's why I'm not an Einstein. I'm good in math and remembering addresses.
Beth ~ That's true.
Robin ~ Missouri! Boy, y'all have some serious winters up there. It's lovely there though when it warms up. :o)
Janeen ~ That's me all over. I can remember things from the 70s and 80s but not what we had for supper last night.
Musey ~ Ferndale, Michigan. Y'all have serious winters too. (Brrrr!) I still remember my first phone number too: 267-4488. Well, it was my parents phone #. It was my dad's # for over 50 years.
White Linen ~ Time flies when you're having fun!
Judith ~ Mineral Wells, Texas ... hey, this is fun ... I LOVE TEXAS!!! [a friendly wave your way] My husband and I want so badly to live in the Hill Country but y'all made the mistake of letting Californians move there. The invasion drove up the land prices. Drats! [lol]
Kirby3131 ~ It's funny the things we remember from childhood, isn't it.
Thanks y'all for stopping by and have a wonderful SAFE Memorial Day weekend. :o))
I remember those postcards!
ReplyDeleteThanks Peggy! Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. :o)
